Heavy Legs

Do Your Legs Feel Heavy?

If you answered “yes,” you could suffer from leg heaviness. This common condition causes your legs to feel like they are made of lead, making them heavy and weak. The causes can vary, but the most frequent are related to vascular concerns. We can identify what’s causing it and get you the needed treatment.

Other causes:
Varicose veins, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and overtraining syndrome (OTS) can all cause this issue.

Common symptoms:
The signs depend on the individual but generally include tiredness, aches, cramps, and leg stiffness.

Potential Causes of Leg Heaviness

Varicose Veins:
The weak walls and high pressure lead to swollen, distorted veins, resulting in heaviness.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD):
Due to plaque buildup in the arterial pathways, restricted blood flow and oxygen delivery to the limbs lowers, leading to a feeling of weightiness.

Overtraining Syndrome (OTS):
Not allowing adequate time for recovery between workouts can present many issues, including a sense of heft in the legs.

Treating Leg Heaviness

Compression gear, lifestyle changes, and medication are common treatments for alleviating leg swelling. Vein clinics may recommend other interventional therapies such as Sclerotherapy, Radiofrequency, laser, and vein ablation to treat leg heaviness. If you have been experiencing leg heaviness for an extended period, please visit one of our vein clinics to formulate a plan that fits your precise diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some treatments are manageable from home if you’re having difficulties with your legs feeling heavy. But if the symptoms do not seem to improve and become worse, for example, by swelling or cramping, then it is recommended to consult a medical professional.

One of our vein specialists will begin with a physical exam to evaluate your condition. They will ask you questions about your medical history, discuss the symptoms you are experiencing, and may request some tests. After they have studied these results and identified the cause, they will create a treatment plan tailored specifically for you, including follow-up appointments.

When varicose veins are the source of your leg discomfort, we can provide a few different procedures to help address this condition:

  • Laser therapy: Similar to radiofrequency treatment, but uses heat from a laser source instead.
  • Radiofrequency vein ablation: Similar to laser ablation, but uses radiofrequency energy instead.
  • Sclerotherapy: It uses injections to reduce the size of damaged veins.
  • Vein removal: It involves the removal of any sections of veins that are damaged or malfunctioning.

This minimally invasive procedure is the most reliable method of treating varicose veins, the primary culprit behind heavy leg feelings. It is a fast process completed in only around half an hour and can generate long-lasting results. Smaller vessels need a few weeks to subside, while bigger ones might take a few months to vanish.

Sclerotherapy treats leg heaviness by addressing the underlying cause, often associated with varicose or spider veins. These conditions can cause blood to pool in the legs and lead to swelling, discomfort, and heaviness.

After sclerotherapy, it is safe to go back to your typical schedule. However, you must keep wearing compression stockings for the first day. To prevent clots, be sure to remain active. Pain management can be done with acetaminophen. Do not expose the treated area to excessive sunlight and refrain from using hot baths or saunas. If you do go outside, wear sunscreen to avoid staining or scarring. A thirty-minute daily walk is suggested in order to aid healing. Contact your doctor if something unusual occurs.
